Yes. It exists.

Last Saturday at Albert Hall in Woodstock all three groups were rapping in Afrikaans (plus English). It was wild.

Max Normal.tv was the highly anticipated headliner of the night. Returning after a two-year hiatus, the three-member crew drove the young crowd into a frenzy. The fans up front roughhoused all through the set, spraying water into my camera and shoving each other around.

As for the bandleader, he reminded me of Kevin Barnes (Of Montreal) in that matured jester sort of way. His wife, bandmate, and mother of his child: a little M.I.A., a little Lady Sovereign.

Sound clip to come.

Gourmet market at Woodstock: a slice of Europe

without comments

Hankering for crepes (20 rand) or a glass of kir royal (20 rand)? Find both at the Neighbourgoods Market on Saturday mornings from 9 to 2 at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock.

The freshest, most exquisite sandwich of grilled eggplant, feta, made-from-scratch sundried tomato pesto and mayo: 30 rand ($4). Aged rump steak hot off a Weber grill, dripping in juices, topped with arugula, red onion, onion marmalade and spicy mustard: 40 rand ($5).

Filled with well-to-do South Africans, expats and models, the market is fun for people-watching and label-spotting as well.
